The pipe groove is made by machining an actual groove into the ends of two pipes.

A gasket wraps around top of the pipe ends, housings wrap around the gasket & sit in the pipe grooves, then bolts & nuts are tightened to hold it all together.

Grooved pipe couplings & fittings used to join pipes in both wet and dry system. They provided some flexibility in terms of movement and deflection to the piping system.
